Music i have been listening to recently, it might take a while to get through, but the rewards are well worth the time in my opinion. Some of it may be familiar others are more obscure.

CAN - Needs no introduction, just some footage of some repetitious grooves that i hadn't yet heard. (post 1 + 2)

German Oak - Summer of 72, 5-man Düsseldorf instrumental group German Oak entered the Luftschutzbunker (Air Raid Shelter) studio to record their first, eponymous album. The purpose of recording in a bunker was to recreate the feelings experienced by German soldiers during the Allied invasion of 1944. The strange acoustic conditions in the bunker made the music, which was a series of long, spacious guitar jams, sound distant and filled with echo. (post 3 + 4)

Current 93 - are an eclectic British Experimental Music group, working since the early 1980s in folk-based musicalforms. The band was founded in 1982 by David Tibet (né David Michael Bunting, renamed 'Tibet' by Genesis P Orridge sometime prior to forming the group).

Strawberry Alarm Clock - One of my favorite SAC songs, incense and peppermints off the album off the same name.

Comus - Very beautiful psych-folk band, we played this album non stop whilst driving the Big Sur in California on our recent trip. The song is called Song to Comus.

Brainticket - Black Sand, this one just makes me loose my mind. In a good way.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Another very poppy one, but very cool feel to this band.

Oh and the first image is the band Comus.

It's rare to find an individual so humble and so full of knowledge, yet even rarer to find one whom can articulate an abundant ocean of cosmic knowledge as well as Terence can. Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. A number of artists -- among them the Dead Milkmen, Yo La Tengo, the Velvet Underground's songs. And he as collaborated with the likes of Jad Fair (a founding member of Half Japanese, who've also done Daniel's songs), the Butthole Surfers, Bongwater/Shimmydisc guru Kramer, and members of Sonic Youth. Daniel gained his widest public exposure to date when, at the 1992 MTV Music Awards, Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain (who constantly touted Daniel in interviews) wore a Johnston T-shirt.

Free Radicals is a short animated film by artist and experimental film maker Len Lye.

Lye often painted, scratched, stencilled and even cut holes in film, composing motion and colour to extraordinary effect. In this particular video, Lye directly scratched the film stock, with the resulting "figures of motion" set to music of the Bagirmi tribe of Africa.

City of Melbourne - New $A240,000 Logo

Im going to come straight out with it, i think this logo is shit, rubbish, especially for that amount of money. But the thing that leaves a bad taste in the mouth is that its done by Landor in Sydney yes Sydney. I thought Melbourne was meant to have its own culture with a thriving arts/design sector, surely a Melbourne based studio could have been commissioned!

So its an improvement on the old design, but that wouldn't have taken much. Its not that its a totally horrible logo, i just don't think it fits in with the many beautiful qualities of Melbourne. I think they have gone with the whole progressive architecture, federation square look, but a city is not limited to its buildings, capturing the feel, the energy of the whole city has to be considered. Too corporate, to flashy, will date very quickly.
When we get some time here at And. we will have a look at doing a redesign.

Sequences Art Festival

Sequences is a real-time art festival in Reykjavík, Iceland hosted annually by The Living Arts Museum. They approaced Jónas Valtýsson, Sveinn Davíðsson and Siggi Odds for art-directing the festival. They teamed up, with Mundi helping for some parts, and produced printed material and a website for this ever-growing festival.
The final product consists of an idea of milk captured in time, hinting at the festival's real-time focus - with strong typography overlaying the b/w image with a screaming bright colour. The milk idea came from Mundi, while Jónas photographed, Siggi Odds did the type design and typography and Jónas, Sveinn and Siggi Odds worked together on the production of the printed material and website.
The posters and printed material were printed in two colour offset, black and a bright PMS 805 by an environmental friendly printer.

Toshio Saeki (佐伯俊男) is a Japanese artist and mangaka born in 1945 famous for his paintings and drawing focusing on erotica, violence, and perversion. He has published numerous book and had gallery shows around the world. It has been suggested that his highly original erotic creations have been influential on some of Japan's most well known contemporary artists including Aida Makoto and Takashi Murakami. Saeki's paintings often feature men and women as well as demons, animals, corpses, and other creatures in various erotic or violent settings. His work has received warnings from the Japanese government, though it has never been officially banned. His works are collected avidly by erotic art fans in Japan, America, France, and other parts of the world. Saeki has said that he enjoys using his art to shock people and he doesn't really involve himself in the extreme activity of his best known works. Here.

YVES KLEIN - “Le Saut dans le vide” [The Leap into the Void]

In the continuation of his work on pictorial space, Klein turned his attention to space itself, in other words the void, as specified in his theory of impregnation.

One of his first productions on the theme of the void was the famous exhibition “of the void” in 1958, entitled La spécialisation de la sensibilité à l’état matière première en sensibilité picturale stabilisée [The specialisation of sensibility in the raw material state into stabilised pictorial sensibility]. For this exhibition, Klein himself impregnated the space with artistic sensibility using blue as an intermediary. Indeed, whereas the interior space of the empty gallery was painted entirely in white, parts of the exterior where decorated in blue: the display window was painted blue, visitors were met by a blue curtain, the invitation cards and stamps were blue, and even the cocktails offered by the artist were tinted with methylene blue.

Thus the white space of the gallery could be perceived as being contaminated by the blue.

However, Yves Klein’s most renowned work on the void is undoubtedly his “Saut dans le vide” [Leap into the void], a photograph of which he presented in a fake issue of the “Journal du Dimanche” dedicated to his exploration of the void, on 27 November 1960.

On the front page of the newspaper, the leap appeared as a feat. The title of the image had a sensational tone: “A man in space! The painter of space throws himself into the void!” More precisely, as he explained in the legend accompanying the photo, he was attempting by this action to come as close as possible to space. “To paint space, I owe it to myself to go there, to that very space… without illusions or tricks, nor with a plane or a parachute or a rocket ship: [the painter of space] must go there by his own means, with an independent individual force, in a word, he must be capable of levitation.”

But does this mean that the photo was authentic? Although it is obviously a photomontage, the leap was not faked. When he carried out his action, Klein was met on the ground by an outstretched tarpaulin. This was the only “precaution” that has been removed from the final image, by replacing it with a shot of the street before the leap.

So Klein really did jump, thus experimenting and impregnating himself with the immaterial qualities of the void, so that he could transmit them to his artworks.

'My intent is to render an accurate likeness of my subject however what I find more compelling is communicating the sitter’s “ inner world." I am interested in creating a dialogue regarding the use of recycled materials and ecologically minded art making practices. My work is comprised of recycled wood. These forms are then surfaced with a combination of overlaid recycled wood pieces and acrylic pigmented grout. Dubai, of the United Arab Emirates, has dredged sand from the sea floor to build hundreds of artificial islands along its coast, hoping to attract wealthy tourists. Many projects have been put on hold since the global credit crunch hit the region.

Clearing the Amazon
Over the past three decades, the state of Rondônia in western Brazil cleared almost 35 percent of its rainforest. According to NASA’s website, the pattern of deforestation is common in the Amazon. People build roads, then clear some of the land for small farms. After a few years, the land erodes and becomes depleted. The farmers, suffering from low crop yields, convert the land for cattle, then clear more forest for crops, and so on until large cattle holders buy the land.

I was lucky enough to see some of his work at the Leopold Museum in Vienna, it was amazing to see the sketches he did before even staring a painting, which where of a more realist nature, then to break all the rules and create the twisted, contorted works he is known for. Patterns of Creative Aggression is a bi-annual publication presenting the development of creative works and the people behind them. It aims to offer an insight into how works are formulated and constructed, people's work patterns, their methods of practice, and techniques utilised and explored.

The magazine is ultimately trying to show what is involved in the creative process; a behind the scenes look into how the works readers might see in galleries, on the shelf and read about in other magazines are produced.

Issue 2 is launching at No Vacancy Gallery in Melbourne, Thursday 28th May.

Louis Wain was an English artist best known for his drawings, which consistently featured anthropomorphised large-eyed cats and kittens. In his later years he suffered from schizophrinia, which, according to some psychologists, can be seen in his works. The similarity between these images and the ones encountered on a DMT trip are amazing.
